The importance of Almsgiving and Charity during Lent

Extreme Unction

Charity and almsgiving hold immense significance during Lent, representing profound expressions of compassion and empathy.

During Lent, almsgiving reminds us of the need to look beyond ourselves and extend our hands to those in need. It’s not just about financial assistance; it’s about cultivating a spirit of generosity in every aspect of our lives. This practice serves as a cornerstone of Lent, inviting us to transform our hearts and actions.

Reflecting on the words of Saint Robert Bellarmine, who said, “Charity is that with which no man is lost, and without which no man is saved,” we understand that our acts of charity are not merely optional gestures but essential components of salvation. By embracing charity, we not only uplift others but also safeguard our own spiritual well-being.

Work of Mercy

There are many different ways to practice charity and almsgiving during Lent. If you’re wondering how to choose the charitable activities you’d like to engage in this Lenten season, you can look to the Works of Mercy for guidance. These are divided into two categories:

The Spiritual Works of Mercy are:

To instruct the ignorant;
To counsel the doubtful;
To admonish sinners;
To bear wrongs patiently;
To forgive offences willingly;
To comfort the afflicted;
To pray for the living and the dead.

The Corporal Works of Mercy are:

Feed the hungry.
Give drink to the thirsty.
Clothe the naked.
Visit the imprisoned.
Shelter the homeless.
Visit the sick.
Bury the dead.

Let us explore and embrace various forms of charity through the Works of Mercy. We can make a meaningful difference in our communities remembering Our Lord’s words, “By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:35)
