Lenten Activities for Families – Engaging the Youth in Faith

Lenten Activities for Families

In a world filled with distractions and temptations, guiding your children in the ways of the Catholic faith can serve as a compass, helping them make good choices and avoid negative influences. Involving your children in meaningful Lenten activities can be a wonderful way to teach them about this important period of the year.

We can turn this Lent into a time for learning and bringing family members together. Here are some suggestions:

Family Prayer Time: Dedicate a specific time each day for the family Rosary. It’s a great opportunity for them to learn about the importance of prayer and reflection. As Father Patrick Peyton would say, “The family that prays together, stays together.”

Read Lenten Stories: As St. Augustine wisely noted, “The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.” In the spirit of exploration, pick age-appropriate Lenten stories or books that highlight the significance of this season. Reading these stories together can be a memorable experience for your children.

Lenten Crafts: Engage your children in creative activities related to Lent. They can make their own prayer cards, and create crosses.

Helping Others: Encourage your children to get involved in acts of kindness. This could include volunteering at a local charity, helping a neighbor in need, or simply writing encouraging notes to friends and family.

Fasting Together: Discuss the concept of fasting with your children and guide them in age-appropriate fasting practices. It can be something as simple as skipping dessert or reducing screen time. Whatever it is should be done for the love of God.

Let us embrace this Lenten season as an opportunity to strengthen your family’s faith and ensure that your children grow up with a strong moral compass, making them less likely to stray from the right path in life.
