Leadership Camp 2015

Morning Star Leadership Camp at Montfort Retreat opened the season for our camps for Catholic boys and girls. Five weeks in all! At this first camp, a vibrant group of 80 teen-age girls from across the country came to strengthen the leadership skills which will enable them to make a difference by bringing Christ’s presence into anti-catholic society.

Thanks to Father David Lewis of Saint Adelaide's Parish in Peabody, MA, who serviced the camp as a full-time chaplain, each day began with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and an inspiring sermon. We cannot thank him enough!

Each day of the week had a designated  theme with corresponding presentations and speakers:

Totus Tuus Monday delved into the spirituality of True Devotion to Mary. Father David Lewis address the group after dinner on this important spirituality. Evangelization Tuesday introduced  campers to public speaking skills and exercises. The day also featured Margie Carr, retired Brockton Police gave some very helpful tips on how to protect yourself in today’s society, including dressing modestly! Persecution Awareness Wednesday brought the reality of standing up for your faith to a new level by a presentation on the life and sufferings of the Chinese Catholics, and in particular, Cardinal Ignatius Kung. In the evening, guest speaker, Roman Gorski inspired the girls with stories of his imprisonment for the faith during Solidarity in Poland. Pro-Life Thursday brought the reality of our part in the pro-life movement, home to each girl and guest speaker Janet Noonan kept the audience enthralled with her experiences as side walk counselor. (We were also honored to have a Morning Star Alumna, now working at a very active Pro-Life Organization as a guest speaker during the week!) Perseverance Friday got the campers ready to set off back into the world as resolute young Catholics  witnessing for Christ. Grace Gikura, from Kenya, gave a wonderful talk on how you cannot persevere if you don’t know your Faith and how to be strong when the world  is turning hostile to it.

Arts and crafts, musical activities, hiking, sports, waterfront boating, swimming and sailing took up the rest of the morning and afternoon hours in the beautiful surroundings of Montfort and the perfect weather God provided! Evening rosary and benediction of the Blessed Sacrament was held daily before dinner in the rustic majesty of Morning Star Chapel.

Aside from "Movie Night" and "Talent Night" each day wrapped up at the traditional campfire with song and comraderie before joining the Sisters in their evening Compline. To hear the voices of so many young ladies raised in chant would do the Catholic world good… there is truly hope for the future, and these young ladies are it!
