Camp Memories

W
hen over ninety girls signed in at MSC Camp on July 2nd, donned their (bright orange) camp tee-shirt and lugged their belongings to their two-man tents; the official Morning Star Camp 2006 began!… a tradition of over 25 years, sponsored by the Sisters, the Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary!

Everything is exciting at Morning Star where catholic girls ages 9 to 18, from across the country… and beyond…come to make life-long friends in a program based on "To Jesus through Mary".

After the call to "rise and shine" and morning prayers, the campers raced to be first in the breakfast line…then the morning activities began! Divided by age into groups, the girls started the daily program by attending Religion classes along the shore with their assigned Sister. After that they made their way to their Arts and Craft class where they were taught a variety of skills …leather craft, painting, beadwork, etc. Following "Arts and Crafts", campers then chose music related classes, including Baton Twirling, Drama, Dancing, Recorder …and Self Defense!

At noon time the girls stopped their busy schedule for the most important event of the day, when they knelt in an outdoor chapel and the Latin Tridentine Mass was celebrated.

In the afternoons the beaches were busy…as the girls went swimming, canoeing, sailing and kyaking. Boating was a real favorite this year thanks to beautiful weather and a wonderful breeze. The sail boats zig-zaged across the lake as the campers mastered the craft of guiding the sail and centerboard.…and if the boats flipped (which many did!) –it was only more fun! Screams and laughter could be heard all over the lake!!

Then of course there were the meals which are always delicious…and exciting at MSC; no sooner did the girls finish eating when their favorite "cup game" or clap game began thundering through the lodge. This year a new one was added to the repertoire – the lap hand jiving, which gets faster and faster until it turns to chaos.)

The beautiful sunsets on the lake in the evening hours that followed dinner were enjoyed with activities like a scavenger hunts, puili sticks, races, competitions and games with a great amount of spirit, sportsmanship…and volume! There was even a volleyball game of Sisters vs. campers! It was all in fun… the Sisters did win of course! Two high lights of the week's night activities were the MSC Dance Night and the 4th of July Competitions…and a surprise visit from the Ice Cream Man (and his wife)!

Just as the last rays of sunlight disappeared, and darkness closed in around the campsite, campers grabbed their flashlights and bug spray and headed off to the campfire for an hour or so of enthusiatic singing, clapping …and dancing to the tune of the Sister's guitar! Memory-making evenings that no one will ever forget.

Sad to say, the week came to a close all too quickly…and before we knew it the Annual Talent Night and Award Ceremony were upon us; A spirit of comradery and joy made the entertainment so enjoyable for everyone! The Last night stroll to the tents seemed so sad and soon the morning came, it was time to roll up sleeping bags, lug baggage back to the parking lot and await the arrival of parents. Good-byes as always were sad – especially after such a terrific week – and even though campers were happy to see their parents and share thier experiences, there were still many tearful departures.

Now the Sisters are already looking forward to another exciting week…or two…next year in summer of 2007! We hope to see you there! …and in the meantime– keep in touch! May Our Lady Morning Star bless you!
