The Road Less Traveled (for now!)
Although work on Montfort Retreat was not as extensive as we anticipated, it did continue through- out the summer. Having completed the plans for the road into the camp, we submitted the
required applications for permits to begin work. The first 600 feet of road crossed no wetlands and that permit was easily obtained. This length is only one fifth of the eventual driveway. The remainder of the proposed road crosses a small stream and will require culverts. We hope to finish the entire drive before the end of November, providing that the last permits are approved soon.
Searching for the most cos-effective way to cut the trees,
bulldoze and gravel the road, the Brothers hired a local timberman who cleared a path fifteen feet wide, removing trees with heavy equipment. Then we bought a used bulldozer, and began the work ourselves. Brother Anthony-Marie and Tom Kapp spent many hours in the heat of the summer preparing the ground andspreading the various types of gravel for drainage. When the Sisters drove up to check on the progress they were amazed. Emerging from a tangle of underbrush, and acres of trees, the vision of our camp is taking for
m at last. The Sisters tried the buldozer which gave them a better appreciation of the work that lies before us. We thank all our supporters for being patient with the camp project. We did meet our June appeal and we promise to keep you informed of the upcoming progress. It wont be long now before the exciting part begins: the cabins and related buildings.
