Saint Benedict Center

Topping It Off…

“What is that?” This was the common question of newcomers touring the Center, as they pointed to a wooden bullet-shaped form in the backyard of the convent. But on June 28th of this year that question was permanently answered.
As the Sisters watched, the small scale dome was lifted into place and secured by the Brothers and helpers.
atop the tower of the new Gate of Heaven Chapel The three-story tower which now boasts of a copper top and edging, and serves as a bell toweris part of the original design for the chapel drawn up by our dear friend and architect, the late John Howard.
What was for years just a dream and a drawing, has now become a reality; and Gate of Heaven Tower stands in testimony of the talent and skill of the architectand the Brothers’ workmanship.
Inside, the tower is a spiral staircase, which will be lite by three windows and topped with a bell. The bell was a donation from Harry Saucier, of Cape Cod. The whole tower will be comple when it is finally topped with a nine-foot iron cross that will be seen above the entire roof
Now that the tower is complete, and the building is sided and windows framed, and with winter around the corner, serious work will soon focus on the finish work in the interior of the chapel.
We are still looking for stain glass windows.
