This beautiful throw is a replica of the icon which is believed to have been painted by Saint Luke, one of the four Evangelists.
Saint Helena, the mother of Constantine the Emperor, discovered the icon in Jerusalem in the fourth century and gave it to her son who had a shrine built for it in Constantinople. During a battle the icon was placed on the walls of the city, and the invaders retreated. It was later moved to Poland and is now enshrined at the monastery in Czestochowa, on the hill of Jasna Gora. It was desecrated by looters, thrown into fire and burned and slashed with a sword—thus the Madonna’s dark appearance and the slash marks on her right cheek.
This thick, richly colored tapestry is royal crimson, blue and gold, woven of 100% cotton and measures 48 x 72 inches. It is machine washable.
