Magazine Reviews
This comment responds to the From the Housetops issue on Takashi Nagai (Vol. XLVIII, No. 1, Serial No. 90, copyright 2007). The article on him by Sr. Katherine Maria, MICM inspired me to write an 8-p. essay of my own on parallels between the life of (1) this citizen of Japan who had experienced the terrible ravages of nuclear warfare in the U.S. bombing in WWII of Nagasaki in 1945, and (2) a current citizen of the U.S. who is a Ph.D. physicist – myself who had lost everything – job, career, ability to work itself, health and so on. This latter resulted from stating out of tender conscience to my line manager in 1995 at a U.S. national laboratory where the atomic bomb used over Nagasaki had been designed and built, a preference to not work on ‘The Bomb’ per se. Unexpectedly, I was unjustly included in a large layoff to occur later that year as justified to workforce and press to deal with a budget shortfall. Then I was terminated despite my best efforts to find another job there, despite being qualified. To experience the Cross should not be surprising, for it is possible for a believer in Jesus Christ to find parallels between his or her own life and that of some saint or holy person that one through grace hears about. For, through the Sacrament of Baptism, we each are called to holiness on a path along which we are accompanied by the Blessed Virgin Mary when we say “Yes!” to her as the way to Christ Himself on Calvary and beyond. Indeed, reflecting on one’s own life of faith in Christ as expressed in words and actions can bring consolation over losses for his sake. To quote from my essay written in 2012: “Time and again, Takashi Nagai was at death’s door, but graces for him as implored of God by his wife, Midori Moriyama, rescued him again and again. His body and soul responded to the outpouring and indwelling of these graces with new vitality as he showed the world how to forgive, how then to move on such as by teaching and by writing and provide an authentic example to the world of what peace really is – God’s peace won by nonviolence, not man’s peace ‘won’ by victory in war.” I, too, took the pathway of nonviolence to deal with losses, let go, and continue on the journey to Heaven Itself.

I loved the articles on the Miraculous Medal in the latest issue. I learned things I had never heard before about St. Catherine Laboure, and about how devotion to the medal spread to millions while she remained hidden and anonymous. It was called miraculous because it truly wrought miracles. Thanks to Our Lady who wanted us to wear this reminder of her motherly care for us.

We in the trenches in the outside world are in dire need of this type of magazine. Truth is not so popular today and that is why it is needed more than ever. We thank God for you.

We are always happy to see "From the Housetops" arrive in the mail and we like the way that each issue focuses on a certain saint or theme. Much of the information would not be found in other publications. The articles are enlightening, the layout is pleasing, and the use of beautiful imagery brings the articles to life. Thank you for valuing, preserving, and sharing our Catholic traditions.
